A lot of users never use the "Mark forums read" or "Mark topics read" link which can lead to a lot of bloat in the topics_track table and to some degree the forums_track table. Especially with older/very active forums.
My first suggestion is Admin setting that would mark topics read for everyone whatever time length the Admin chooses. This will keep the topics_track and forums_track table reasonable sizes. A default of 0 for current behavior and setting for months to change default.
Second suggestion would be a user setting. One thing that was nice about phpBB2 was topic marking was based on session. The only way to get same behavior in phpBB3 is for the user to "Mark forums read" before leaving. Give them option to automatically mark everything read based on last visit.
